Google announced new updates for Google Maps that introduce a conversational AI feature called “Ask Maps” along with an updated “Immersive Navigation” experience. The changes aim to make navigation more interactive by combining AI-powered search with improved route visualization.

The new features are designed to help users ask complex questions about places, plan trips more easily, and receive more detailed guidance while driving.

The “Ask Maps” feature uses Google’s Gemini AI model to answer questions using natural language. Users can ask detailed, real-world questions, such as where to charge a phone without waiting in long lines at a café or where to find a public tennis court with lights available at night.

The feature can also help with travel planning. For example, users heading to locations such as the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes can ask for recommended stops along the route. Google Maps will then provide directions, estimated travel times, and suggestions based on tips shared by other users.

Google said the AI can personalize responses using signals from a user’s activity on Maps, including previously searched places or locations saved to their account. For instance, if someone prefers vegan restaurants, Ask Maps may suggest nearby dining options that offer vegan menus.

Ask Maps is currently rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. Google said desktop support will follow soon.

Immersive Navigation Experience

Google also introduced a redesigned navigation system called “Immersive Navigation.” The update brings a 3D view of roads and surrounding areas, showing nearby buildings, terrain, and overpasses.

The interface highlights important road details such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help drivers better understand their surroundings.

Maps will also provide a wider view of the route using smart zoom and transparent buildings. This allows drivers to see upcoming turns and lane changes more clearly.

Improved Voice Guidance and Route Insights

Google has updated the app’s voice navigation to sound more natural. Instead of simple directions, users may hear instructions such as going past one exit before taking the next for a specific highway.

The app will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of alternative routes. For example, it may show a longer route with less traffic or a faster option that includes toll roads.

Maps will also alert drivers to disruptions along the route, including road construction and crashes. These alerts are based on data from both the Google Maps and Waze communities.

Destination Preview and Parking Guidance

Before starting a trip, users can preview their destination using Street View images and receive recommendations on where to park.

As drivers approach their destination, Maps will highlight building entrances, nearby parking areas, and which side of the street the location is on.

Miriam Daniel, Vice President of Google Maps, said the company redesigned the navigation experience to reduce uncertainty during trips by offering clearer visuals, timely information, and more intuitive guidance.

Immersive Navigation begins rolling out in the United States today. Google said availability will expand in the coming months to supported Android and iOS devices, as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built in.

Expansion of Gemini in Google Maps

The update builds on Google’s earlier integration of Gemini into Maps last year. The AI assistant can already answer questions about places along a route, provide information on topics such as sports or news, and add events to a calendar.

Google also began using Gemini with Street View to improve navigation instructions by referencing nearby landmarks such as gas stations, restaurants, or well-known buildings instead of relying only on distance measurements.
