Hyundai Motor has halted sales of certain 2026 Hyundai Palisade SUVs in the United States and Canada and announced a recall after a power seat issue was linked to a fatal incident involving a child in Ohio.

According to the automaker, sales of the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims have been stopped because the second and third row power seats may not detect contact with an occupant or object as intended.

The action follows an incident on March 7 in Ohio in which a two year old girl died. Hyundai said the matter remains under investigation and that it does not yet have the full details of what happened.

The company expressed condolences to the child’s family and said it is working on a recall fix for the affected vehicles. Hyundai is also offering rental vehicles to customers who prefer alternative transportation until a permanent remedy becomes available.

Hyundai said the recall will cover about 68,500 vehicles, including around 60,500 in the United States and approximately 8,000 in Canada.

While the company prepares a full recall solution, it is developing an interim over the air software update expected by the end of March. The update will enhance the system’s response when the seats come into contact with occupants or objects and introduce additional safety safeguards.

Hyundai has also advised users to exercise caution when operating second and third row power seat functions and to ensure that no person or object, including children, is in the seat or folding area before activating the system.

The development comes weeks after the Hyundai Palisade was introduced in Pakistan. Hyundai Pakistan recently revealed the ex-factory prices of the flagship SUV and opened bookings for two hybrid variants.
