Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has issued an urgent call for the immediate completion of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, framing the mega-project as essential to countering what he described as India’s use of water as a weapon against Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Speaking at an election rally in Diamer on Wednesday, Bilawal accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of violating the Indus Waters Treaty and weaponizing water resources in what he termed “hydro terror.” He declared that no infrastructure project in Pakistan holds greater importance than the dam, which sits at the heart of the country’s water and energy security.<\/p>\n

“This is not just the right of the people of Diamer\u2014it is Pakistan’s need,” Bilawal told supporters, urging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to apply his trademark “Shehbaz speed” to expedite the project’s completion.<\/p>\n

The Diamer-Bhasha Dam represents one of Pakistan’s most ambitious infrastructure undertakings. With a projected capacity of 4,500 megawatts and an estimated price tag of $15 billion, the dam is set to become one of the largest in the world once finished. Beyond electricity generation, the project promises to irrigate 1.2 million acres of farmland and extend the operational lifespan of the aging Tarbela Dam by 35 years\u2014critical gains for a nation grappling with chronic water shortages and energy deficits.<\/p>\n

Bilawal’s remarks come as Gilgit-Baltistan prepares for regional elections scheduled for June 7. The PPP chairman appealed to voters to elect a PPP chief minister, claiming his party had won the most votes in the previous GB elections but was denied nine seats. He invoked the political legacies of his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother Benazir Bhutto, emphasizing their commitment to marginalized communities.<\/p>\n

He also praised President Asif Ali Zardari for launching the Benazir Income Support Programme and maintaining focus on GB’s development needs. Bilawal pledged to replicate the PPP’s healthcare expansion in Sindh\u2014where the party claims to have built a network of free hospitals\u2014across Gilgit-Baltistan if elected.<\/p>\n

In a pointed jab at jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, Bilawal reminded the audience that foreign military bases operating in Pakistan were shut down under a PPP-led government, dismissing Khan’s later claims of having said “absolutely not” to such facilities as hollow rhetoric.<\/p>\n
