The Botswana-flagged ship was disabled when the missile struck its engine room.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards responded swiftly, launching missiles and drones at American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. Iranian media reported attacks on the US Fifth Fleet headquarters and regional airbases, though Washington said the strikes either failed or were intercepted before causing damage.

The flare-up marks the most serious fighting since a fragile ceasefire brokered by Pakistan took effect in early April. More than three months after the war began with coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, the conflict remains locked in a dangerous stalemate with the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to global shipping.

For Pakistan, the escalation represents a critical test of Islamabad’s mediation efforts. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday, stressing the urgent need to prevent any breakdown in the understandings reached so far. Pakistan has invested significant diplomatic capital in bringing Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table, hosting direct talks in April and maintaining backchannel communications ever since.

Yet the path to peace appears increasingly rocky. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that Iran must agree to severe long-term limits on its nuclear enrichment activities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz without charging transit fees. Tehran, meanwhile, is demanding access to twelve billion dollars in frozen assets, an end to the US naval blockade, and sanctions relief before making any major concessions.

Reports emerged that President Donald Trump sent a tougher proposal back to Iran over the weekend, further complicating negotiations. Iran’s chief negotiator warned that Tehran would not approve any deal unless it fully secures Iranian rights, citing longstanding mistrust of American commitments.

Adding to the complexity, a bitter internal dispute has erupted within the US intelligence community. The Central Intelligence Agency has stopped contributing to key intelligence assessments produced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, including reports on the Iran war, according to sources familiar with the matter. The breakdown in cooperation between America’s top spy agencies comes at a moment when clear-headed analysis is most needed.

The war has already killed thousands, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, and triggered a parallel conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has displaced over one million Lebanese. Global energy markets remain under severe strain, with oil prices volatile and fears mounting that supplies could hit historically low levels.

For ordinary Pakistanis, the conflict’s economic ripple effects are being felt through higher fuel costs and inflationary pressure. Pakistan’s role as mediator also carries risks, requiring delicate balancing between its longstanding ties with Iran, its partnerships with Gulf states, and its complex relationship with Washington.

Pakistani officials have emphasised that mediation must become a guiding principle of conflict prevention, not merely a tool deployed after crises explode. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad told the United Nations that the international community’s first responsibility is to prevent conflicts before they destroy lives and regions.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, speaking in Islamabad this week, praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts and expressed hope that the first phase of a US-Iran agreement would be signed. She warned that the world is paying a very high price for the ongoing conflict, including higher energy costs and potential food shortages next year due to disrupted fertiliser supplies.

Despite the setbacks, Trump insists negotiations are continuing. He claimed on social media that conversations with Iran have been ongoing daily, though Iranian media reported that Tehran had not communicated with Washington for several days.

The coming days will test whether Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts can overcome the mutual distrust, internal American dysfunction, and battlefield provocations that continue to threaten any prospect of lasting peace in the Gulf.

A dangerous new phase has opened in the US-Iran conflict as American and Iranian forces exchanged fresh strikes across the Gulf on Wednesday, even as diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan struggle to produce a lasting

[7
3,9,4
post-170","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world","tag-ai-consensus","tag-geo-news","tag-journalist-ai
https://goodforfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/us-iran-war-escalates-as-cia-pulls-out-of-intelligence-sharing-amid-pakistan-s-mediation-push.png
["GET
