Pakistan now faces a serious economic threat as the United States Trade Representative has unveiled plans to impose tariffs on 60 countries, including Pakistan, over allegations that they have failed to adequately combat forced labour in their supply chains.<\/p>\n

The proposed duties range from 10 to 12.5 percent and will be subject to public consultation before any final decision is made. The move marks a fresh attempt by the Trump administration to reshape its tariff strategy after earlier efforts were struck down by the US Supreme Court in February.<\/p>\n

According to the USTR, Pakistan is among six countries\u2014alongside Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, and Mexico\u2014that have been judged as not effectively enforcing prohibitions on goods made with forced labour. A larger group of 54 economies, including China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom, were found to have failed entirely to impose such prohibitions.<\/p>\n

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended the action, arguing that the failure of major trading partners to address forced labour imports creates an uneven playing field for American workers. He described the situation as unacceptable and said it forces US labour to compete under unfair conditions.<\/p>\n

The proposed tariffs come with several exemptions. Goods such as beef, coffee, certain fruits and nuts, and products from Canada and Mexico that comply with the North American free trade agreement will not be affected. Certain textiles and apparel are also excluded from the duties.<\/p>\n

Still, the announcement has triggered alarm in Pakistan’s business community. The country’s textile and manufacturing sectors, which are heavily reliant on exports to the United States, could face significant damage if the tariffs are implemented. These industries are major employers and critical sources of foreign exchange for Pakistan’s struggling economy.<\/p>\n

The USTR has opened a public comment period running until July 6, after which hearings will be held. This gives affected countries and stakeholders a window to present their case and potentially influence the final outcome.<\/p>\n

The forced labour investigations were launched months ago and covered major trading partners including China, the European Union, and Japan. The probes examined whether these countries took meaningful action against imports of goods made with forced labour and whether such inaction affected US commerce.<\/p>\n

This development comes at a sensitive time for Pakistan, which is already grappling with economic pressures, inflation, and a fragile balance of payments situation. Any reduction in export competitiveness could worsen these challenges and put additional strain on the rupee.<\/p>\n

Pakistani officials and industry leaders are expected to closely monitor the public comment process and may seek to engage with US authorities to contest the findings or demonstrate compliance efforts.
