Without intervention, this hike would have added hundreds of rupees to typical household electricity bills across the country.

A Power Division spokesperson revealed that strategic policy decisions have prevented an additional financial burden of approximately Rs38 billion from reaching consumers. The monthly fuel adjustment has been contained at just Rs1.73 per unit, far below what market conditions would normally dictate.

The relief comes despite serious operational challenges, including suspended liquefied natural gas supplies and reliance on expensive furnace oil for power generation. Ordinarily, such constraints would trigger automatic tariff increases to cover higher fuel costs.

Officials credited several factors for the tariff freeze: improved availability of domestic natural gas, increased electricity output from imported coal-based power plants, and what they described as continuity in national energy policies. A targeted relief package also played a role in cushioning consumers from price shocks.

The announcement builds on earlier relief measures. During the first quarter of this year, electricity consumers received refunds totaling Rs65 billion. A quarterly adjustment mechanism delivered additional savings of Rs1.93 per unit, effectively offsetting monthly fuel cost fluctuations.

Looking ahead, the Power Division indicated that the reference electricity tariff will remain stable next month as well, with consumers likely to receive a further reduction of approximately Rs0.20 per unit.

The tariff freeze aligns with broader government efforts to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported energy. Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari disclosed earlier this month that 74% of the country’s electricity now comes from domestic sources, with only 26% reliant on imported coal and gas.

Leghari projected that local energy’s share could climb to nearly 96% in coming years as Pakistan transitions away from imported fuels. Feasibility studies are underway to convert imported coal plants to run on domestically mined Thar coal, a shift expected to significantly lower generation costs.

The minister emphasized that while renewable sources like wind and solar are expanding, Pakistan will continue depending on fossil fuels and hydropower to ensure stable, reliable base-load electricity supply.

On the distribution front, Leghari noted that 11,500 of Pakistan’s 14,000 electricity feeders now operate without load-shedding. The remaining areas still experience outages primarily due to transmission losses and theft. The government plans to implement transformer-level management systems and aims to achieve 96% clean energy generation by 2032.

For now, the June tariff freeze offers immediate financial breathing room for Pakistani families, small businesses, and industries navigating one of the country’s most persistent economic pressures.

Pakistani electricity consumers will see no increase in their power bills for June, the Power Division announced Monday, marking a significant reprieve for millions of households already grappling with rising living costs.
