Imports climbed nearly 6 percent to $62.66 billion between July and May, while exports tumbled more than 5.6 percent to just $27.9 billion compared to the previous year. The widening gap underscores Pakistan’s dangerous dependence on imported goods and raw materials at a time when the country can least afford it.

The trade imbalance comes as the Federal Board of Revenue struggles with a massive shortfall. Tax authorities collected Rs11,227 billion against a revised target of Rs12,095 billion through May, leaving a gap that has grown alarmingly wide. FBR officials privately acknowledged that sluggish economic activity linked to regional instability and extended Eid holidays contributed to the revenue crisis, with May alone seeing a Rs184 billion shortfall.

To meet the year’s revised collection target of Rs13,979 billion, the FBR would need to collect an extraordinary Rs2,752 billion in June alone—a figure insiders consider nearly impossible. Many now expect total collections to reach only around Rs13 trillion, falling roughly Rs1 trillion short of what was promised to international lenders.

The revenue crisis carries serious implications for Pakistan’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund, which had already revised the country’s tax target downward from Rs14,130 billion. More concerning still, next year’s budget demands Rs15,267 billion in collections—requiring an additional Rs2,200 billion jump that many economists view as unrealistic given current trends.

There were scattered signs of stabilization in monthly data. May’s trade deficit narrowed nearly 14 percent year-on-year to $2.58 billion as exports inched up slightly and imports declined, suggesting some cooling in domestic demand. The services sector provided rare good news, with its trade deficit shrinking over 17 percent as IT and business services exports surged nearly 18 percent.

Yet analysts warn the services gains remain far too small to offset the massive goods trade imbalance. Sales tax collections at the import stage have nosedived, making revenue recovery increasingly difficult.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif struck an optimistic tone in meetings with business leaders this week, claiming the economy has stabilized through hard work and promising additional industrial development measures in the upcoming budget. He directed tax authorities to resolve pending refund cases by mid-June and announced the export refinance interest rate would remain capped at 4.5 percent through June 2027.

But the numbers tell a different story. With exports falling, imports rising, and tax collection collapsing, Pakistan faces a perfect storm of economic challenges that threaten currency stability, fuel inflation fears, and raise serious questions about the government’s ability to meet its international commitments. The coming weeks will prove critical as authorities scramble to close massive fiscal gaps before the fiscal year ends.

Pakistan faces mounting economic pressure as its goods trade deficit ballooned by over 17 percent to reach $34.758 billion in the first eleven months of the current fiscal year, while tax collection fell nearly Rs868

[2
3,9,4
post-214","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-ai-consensus","tag-geo-news","tag-journalist-ai
https://goodforfree.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/pakistan-s-trade-deficit-explodes-to-34-8-billion-as-exports-collapse-and-tax-shortfall-hits-rs868-billion.png
["GET
