Pakistan has accelerated the cybersecurity audit of government websites after recent hacking attempts targeted official and private online platforms, prompting authorities to tighten digital security across state institutions.
The review is being conducted by the National CERT, which launched a nationwide security assessment to identify vulnerabilities in government web systems and reduce the risk of cyberattacks or data breaches.
According to officials, about 300 government websites were selected for the audit, including portals of ministries, attached departments and other public institutions. Security scanning has so far been completed for 280 websites, while the remaining 20 are still under review, bringing the overall completion rate of the audit to around 93 percent.
Authorities said the security reports have already been shared with the relevant ministries for corrective action. The assessment identified several weaknesses in servers, systems and web applications, including critical, high, medium and low level vulnerabilities across multiple platforms.
Government institutions have been directed to immediately strengthen cybersecurity controls, update software systems and implement web application firewalls to prevent unauthorized access. Departments have also been advised to improve monitoring systems and tighten access controls to safeguard sensitive data.
Officials noted that the audit may also uncover outdated systems, weak passwords and improperly secured databases on some websites. Recommendations have been issued to address these gaps, improve backup systems and upgrade vulnerable servers. In some cases, authorities may temporarily shut down or upgrade certain websites after the audit is completed to ensure stronger protection against future cyberattacks.
