Spotify announced a new feature at the SXSW conference that will allow listeners to review and edit their Taste Profile. The update, currently launching in beta, was revealed by Spotify co CEO Gustav Söderström.
The Taste Profile is the algorithmic model that Spotify uses to understand a user’s listening habits and generate recommendations across the platform.
Spotify’s Taste Profile plays a major role in features such as Discover Weekly, the Made For You playlists, and the annual Spotify Wrapped summary.
With the new update, Premium users will be able to access all of their listening data in one place inside the app. This includes music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The feature will initially roll out to Premium users in New Zealand.
Once the feature is available, users can access their Taste Profile by tapping their profile picture and scrolling down within the app.
They will then be able to edit their profile and adjust recommendations using natural language prompts. For example, users can ask for more or less of a particular music style or vibe.
After changes are made, the Spotify home page will update with a new set of personalized suggestions.
Spotify previously offered limited tools to remove certain tracks or playlists from a user’s Taste Profile. However, these options were not widely visible and did not provide full control.
Because of this, many users complained that Spotify’s recommendations did not always reflect their real listening preferences.
The problem often occurs when multiple people use the same Spotify account. For example, family members may play music through shared smart speakers or televisions, or teenagers may use a parent’s account through CarPlay.
Users may also listen to audio content that does not represent their musical taste, such as sleep sounds, background tracks, or music played for children.
Since users do not always remember to remove those tracks later, the Taste Profile can become cluttered with content they do not actually prefer.
These issues have also affected Spotify Wrapped, the company’s yearly summary of listening habits. In some cases, shared listening activity or background music has distorted users’ results.
Spotify said the new Taste Profile feature is designed to give listeners more control over their recommendations and listening data.
The company plans to expand the feature to additional markets after the initial rollout in New Zealand in the coming weeks.
